Reel Trend Researcher: Job Description, Duties and Who Hires

By Influish Editorial Team · Published

Short answer

A Reel trend researcher watches Instagram Reels and related feeds deliberately, logs the formats, sounds and topics that are rising, and tells a content or strategy team which ones are worth acting on and why. It is a research job, not a viewing job: the output is a dated trend log and short written briefs. The role is usually found at creator and social agencies, media publishers and creator-tech startups.

The role became widely discussed in November 2026, when news outlets reported that an Udaipur company was hiring a paid “doomscroller” to watch Reels and report trends (covered below as reported news). The job title is unusual; the work is not. Agencies and publishers have long had people whose task is to notice what is changing in feeds before it is obvious. This page is a job profile: what the work involves, which skills it rewards and who hires for it.

What does a Reel trend researcher do day to day?

The rhythm varies by employer, but most versions of the role combine four activities.

  1. Structured scanning. Viewing Reels, Explore and a fixed list of creator and competitor accounts at set times, often on a clean or dedicated account so the feed reflects the target audience rather than personal taste.
  2. Logging. Recording each candidate trend with example links, the date it was first seen, the audio or format involved, and the niches it has appeared in.
  3. Judging. Deciding which trends are growing, which have peaked and which suit the brand or creator the team works for. This is the part that separates a researcher from a heavy user.
  4. Reporting. Writing short briefs or presenting a weekly round-up so editors, creators or strategists can act while the trend is still useful.

What skills do employers look for?

Job descriptions for trend and content research roles tend to ask for the same handful of things, whatever the exact title. The checklist below is our summary of those recurring asks.

  • Platform literacy: understanding how Reels, audio, remixes, collabs and Explore work, and keeping up with changes Instagram announces through its creator channels
  • Pattern recognition: noticing a repeated format or sound across unrelated accounts
  • Clear, short writing in English, often plus Hindi or another Indian language for regional content
  • Basic spreadsheet skills for the trend log and simple counts
  • Cultural context: festivals, cricket, film releases and regional humour drive many Indian trends
  • Judgement about brand safety: knowing when a trend is unsuitable for a client
  • Discipline: scanning on a routine rather than when you feel like it

Here is how the role compares with the two jobs it is most often confused with. Full details for all nine roles are in the role comparison matrix.

Who hires Reel trend researchers?

Typical employers and what they use trend research for
Employer typeWhat they use the research for
Creator and social agenciesIdeas for client Reels; pitching formats to brands before competitors do
Media and entertainment publishersPlanning fast, topical short-video content and coverage
Creator-tech startupsContent for their own accounts and insights for creators who use their tools
Consumer brands with in-house teamsDeciding which trends fit the brand and which to avoid
Insights and listening firmsTrend sections in wider consumer reports (closer to social listening work)

Titles vary. Search job portals for trend researcher, trend analyst, content researcher, social media research and social trends, and read the duties rather than the title. Public-sector bodies sometimes advertise related work too: a past MyGov listing for a contractual Social Media Analyst included monitoring trends and researching conversations across platforms (closed in 2024; see Sources).

Is this the same as being paid to scroll?

Not quite. Scrolling is the raw material, in the same way that reading is the raw material of an editor’s job. What an employer pays for is the log and the judgement. A researcher who watches six hours of Reels but cannot say in two sentences why a format is spreading has not done the job. Expect to be assessed on written briefs, not on screen time.

Job description template: Reel trend researcher

The template below is an original example, written for employers drafting a posting and for candidates who want to know what a well-scoped role looks like. It is not a real vacancy. Pay, location and hours are left blank deliberately.

  • Send a short daily alert and a weekly trend brief with recommendations
  • Flag trends that are unsuitable for the brand or carry reputational risk
  • Review how adopted trends performed and update the team’s playbook

You will do well if you

  • Notice repeated formats across unrelated creators
  • Write clearly and briefly in English (and [language] for regional content)
  • Are comfortable with spreadsheets and basic counts
  • Can explain why something is spreading, not just that it is

To apply: share two sample trend briefs or a short trend log. [Application route stated by employer. We never charge candidates.]

Why is this role in the news?

According to media reports from 5 November 2026, Influish, a company described as based in Udaipur, Rajasthan, posted an Instagram video on 4 November announcing a paid “doomscroller” role: someone to watch Reels, spot emerging and viral trends and report them to the team (India Today) (Asianet Newsable). Several outlets reported that interested people were asked to comment “Hi” on the video, that Udaipur-based candidates would receive an application link by DM, and that a hiring form was linked in the bio of the @gangsofstartup Instagram account (NKTV) (Dainik Bhaskar Digital (English)).

The company reportedly said more than 11,000 people had requested the application form, a figure reported by media but not independently verified (Asianet News Hindi). The pay amount, number of openings, deadline, eligibility rules, working hours and whether the role is remote or on-site were not disclosed in any report we verified (as of 6 November 2026). Reports differ on whether the role is full-time or an internship, and details may have changed since. Influish publishes this site; we summarise the reporting here only as context for the role.

We do not link to an application form: when we last checked (6 November 2026), no official Influish page for this opportunity was live. If an official page goes live, we will link it here clearly labelled. Until then, treat any “apply here” link from an unofficial source with caution.
