Instagram Role Comparison Matrix: Skills Across Nine Jobs
By Influish Editorial Team · Published
Short answer
The matrix is an original editorial tool from the Instagram Job Guide team. It reflects how these roles are commonly scoped in Indian agencies, brands and media companies, not a survey or a statistical study. Individual employers will weight skills differently, so treat it as a starting map and read actual job postings for the detail.
How do I read the matrix?
- Three dots: core to the job. You will be judged on this skill in interviews and in your first months.
- Two dots: used often. Part of the regular week; you need to be competent.
- One dot: occasionally helpful. Nice to have; not a hiring factor.
- No dots: rarely needed. Someone else on the team usually does it.
On a phone, scroll the table sideways; the skill names stay pinned on the left.

Two lessons stand out. First, writing in some form (captions, briefs, reports) appears across nearly every role, so practising short, clear writing is never wasted. Second, disclosure and brand safety come up more than beginners expect, especially in influencer, community and UGC work, where ASCI’s guidance on disclosing brand relationships applies week to week. Platform skills such as reading Insights are documented by Instagram itself in its creator hub, and Meta lists role-specific exams (for example Community Management) on its certification page.
How should I use the matrix to choose a role?
- Mark the skills you already have at a “two dots” level or better.
- Find the role whose core skills overlap most with your marks. That is your primary role.
- Pick a backup role from the closest-pairs table above, so your preparation counts twice.
- Close the biggest core-skill gap first, using the 30/60/90-day plan.
For what each role involves day to day, see the role directory, or the in-depth profile of the Reel trend researcher.
